Cultures

The Terrans are run of the mill denizens of Earth whose genetic origins range through myriad races and cultures. In After Earth's post-modern setting, Terrans classify themselves as simply that - Terran. They are often obliquely aware of their ancestry, it just isn't particularly relevant for most. A Terran is a Terran, regardless of skin color or which part of the planet their great great great grandparents happened to live on.

While Terran on Terran racism is generally a thing of the past, the belief that those who populate humankind's home world are superior to colonist offshoots is prevalent and strong. The Earth ecunemopolis may be notoriously polluted, decayed, and overpopulated, but it is where humans belong. That they and their families stick it out is considered a point of pride among the Terran people.

Significant Chinese and Indian influences are found in Terran culture, though it stands to acknowledge that these things are not viewed as such. The thorough blend of all Earth-based cultures has long been a single culture: Terran.

Language

The Terran language is unique in that it is non-regional. Almost every human being in the solar system is fluent. When in rare cases an individual is raised without reaching fluency, they at least have a passing familiarity with the tongue. It is difficult to impossible find a corner of the solar system in which Terran is unknown. Even in Outsider communities on the fringes of civilization, Terran is still spoken. It may be an antiquated version some decades old, but it's enough to ensure that communication is possible.

The history of the Terran language is difficult to cleanly define. Certainly it has roots in the Earth's most widely-spoken historic languages. The invention of the 20th century's world wide web contributed to a slow trickle of shared terminologies and phrases and the later release of the matrix intensified the inevitable development of a global tongue. Today, most can agree that Terran evolved simply as a language of convenience; the result of the adjustments made by individuals over time, allowing them to communicate with anyone and everyone from across the planet, and later the solar system.

Hindi

The Hindi language is spoken almost exclusively by Terran proles. Most prole households on Earth speak both Terran and Hindi in their homes, and most proles grow up using Hindi interchangeably with Terran.

Features

There is no race in the galaxy as difficult to summarize as the Terrans, which can in and of itself be a fair way of spotting one. The Terrans represent the planet Earth's melting pot, boasting an incredibly wide array of features, skin colors, eye colors, shapes, and sizes. People who have features that can't be easily pinpointed tend to be assumed to be Terran, whether or not they are.

The first of the off-world human settlements, Mars was colonized in 2059 by the former United States of America. The initial purpose of the colony was outlined as silicon and metals mining. Terraform technology had advanced just far enough to make the premise of colonization viable, and with the surface ostensibly safe for human occupation after two decades a number of Americans equivalent to the population of a small town were sent on a multi-year journey to establish a homestead off-world.

It has since been hundreds of years, with the first half-century spent isolated; little to no contact with Earth was possible until the advent of Matrix tech in 2102. Martian culture remains embedded in a form of forgotten Americana, evolving on its own, and has been described as 'the Old West shot in the face with modern tech.'

A great, great majority of Martians are descendants of the original colony, as there has been little to no reason to relocate there since. Since interplanetary travel became commonplace, the newcomers tend to be the spouses of native Martians met off-world and brought back to live there.

Martians are a proud people who wear the hardships of life on Mars as badge of honor, and tend to consider off-worlders 'soft.' They are prone to settling disputes physically. Once settled, they don't often hold a grudge.

Most Martians come from the Tharsis colony, which is the most settled part on the planet.

Language

The nearest surviving approximation to the English language, the Martian dialect is perhaps best described as 'spanglish.' Martian is an inflected language that began as a creole of Spanish and American English, evolving over time into an entirely distinct and separate language. Low on subtlety and thick with slang, pronouns can be inflected for person, number, or gender. The language is perceived by non-Martians as coarse and antiquated, the dialect is rarely learned by foreigners.

Features

Dark to middling brown skin-tones and a tendency toward hazel or brown eye colors, Martians tend to be tall, sturdy, and possess a fierce metabolism that keeps their bodies uncannily toned. The livability of Martians has long depended on increased levels of melanin, which has resulted in deeper and darker complexions emerging over time. Though there are many with truly dark skin, some simply have the appearance of a tan. Martians tend to possess light hair colors, ranging through various shades of blonde.

The Venusian people are divided into two distinct tiers: the exceptionally wealthy, and the natives who work to their benefit. During the colonization boom there were multiple failed attempts by the former Trans-Asian Compendium to produce a safe and viable environment for civilian residents. Most resulted in disaster and death; the most successful resulted in misery. Yaoi Lin, an unemployed Chinese engineer, developed the technology for the Eco-Dome which Venus relies upon today. The technology was purchased from Lin by then start-up corporate firm Aizu-Shoto Engineering for a pittance. They went on to use it to found the first safe and secure Venusian colony, transforming a large bubble on the world's surface into a luxury resort that the inventor of the dome could never afford to live in.

Venusian natives tend to be those who work in the hotels and provide services to the resort's many amenities. They are descended from the original colonists and maintain a semblance of interest in the Earth-bound history of their cultures. It is typically known which historical Terran country a Venusian's family originated in, and it is often a point of pride. Venusian natives make an attempt to retain aspects of their genetic identities and former cultures.

The remainder of residents on Venus are either tourists or transplants from off-world, and they greatly outnumber the natives. As the home office of the Lotus Circle, celebrity culture all but wholly overwhelms that of the native colonists. Their resentment is subtle, but ever-present.

The controlled eco-dome that encloses the Venusian colony is maintained at a year-round temperature of 82 degrees Fahrenheit. As such, Venusians tend to struggle in colder climates.

Language

Venusian is a trans-asian language; a tangled, complicated pidgin born of the once distinct languages spoken in Sectors 24 through 27 at the varied times of the Venusian colonies' departures from Earth. Although mostly indistinguishable from any one dead language, Venusian is extremely tonal. Linguistic historians believe that it most closely resembles Mandarin in its sound and pronunciation. Venusian bears a passing relationship with the Terran language, which shares some common linguistic ancestors.

Features

Native Venusians tend toward light to middling complexions with a majority leaning closer to light. Eyes a shade other than brown - though in many, many shades and intensities - are almost unheard of, as are hair colors other than black or very dark brunette. Venusian hair is straight with few to no exceptions. They are a delicately built but tall people who, due to the climate controlled dome in which they live, tend to struggle in cold climates.

The Saturni are the descendents of five families belonging to the former Western European Union, which coalesced into legitimacy only months before they sent the colony to yet-unpopulated space. Native Saturnis were born, raised, and continue to live in the sprawling isolated town-sized station that orbits the gas giant. Their culture is heavily influenced by the United Kingdom, Germany, and France; a frozen in time look at what those places were like when they existed many centuries ago.

Though there are many smaller and unnamed orbitals too insignificant to mention, the central station is called Elysium. To an outsider's eye, it features a curious blend of early 22nd century Western European architecture and sub-modern materials; smooth metals and sturdy resoglass built to resemble what must have been familiar to the colonists.

Saturni stations are almost entirely bereft of crime. What little they encounter tends to be of the civil variety - loitering is generally the highest offense committed in their communities. There are, however, incidents on historical record, suggesting that the stations were less refined in previous centuries.

Language

Almost universally believed to be the most elegant tongue in the solar system, Saturni is the last romance language, featuring the best and most beautiful linguistic influences from historic French, Italian, and to a lesser but still noteworthy extent, British English. Heavily reliant upon metaphor and implication, non-natives tend to find Saturni especially difficult to learn - the words themselves are neither tough to memorize or difficult to pronounce, but the proper contexts with which to use them tend to be maddeningly unknowable to foreigners.

Features

A station-bound race that has lived for generations under the gentle glow of artificial lights and fields of carefully balanced gravity, the Saturni are exceptionally pale, fine-boned, and possess unusually large pupils that have the appearance of being swollen. Their hair colors range from colorless platinum blondes through very light browns, though strains of faint, gingery red are not unheard of. Almost all Saturnis have curly or wavy hair.

Jovians are often perceived as a severe and mirthless people, while they themselves tend to perceive the rest of humanity as guffawing buffoons. Their home station, dubbed Kronstadt, is unornamented but highly functional; safe, sleek, and ever-evolving, the technology used by the Krondstadt station is touted by the Jovians as being several rungs above anything else used today. Whereas the Saturni focus on preservation of the historic architecture of their home station, the Jovians focus on stripping away the old and modernizing, upgrading; keeping everything top of the line and at least appearing to be improving.

The Jovians are the descendants of a Eastern Europeans colony that was primarily populated by members of the then-recently disbanded Russian Federation. Their culture, much like their architecture, is in a state of constant evolution.

Language

As with most languages spoken in human civilization today, the Jovian tongue evolved as a matter of necessity among then-isolated colonists; the original residents of the Krondstadt station were in the majority from Sectors 28 and 18, and their native tongues gradually became developed into a creole of them all. Jovian is a rapidly paced, deep, and aggressive language. Non-native learners often struggle with identifying where words stop and end.

Features

Dark eye colors with dark to light brown hair, long and slender noses with oval faces; the Jovian features tend to be distinct, sharp, and obvious. Like their Saturni cousins, their skin-tones tend toward the very pale due to their station containment, although the technology behind the Krondstadt has resulted in fewer "mutations" than the Saturnis overall. The men are especially noted for their ability to grow dense, thick facial hair.
